"The interconnections of people, dogs, fungi, food...performing" by Nicole Fournier, is a fun subversion “of the gallery walls as a plate”. It is a performance of making a live abstract food painting, on the gallery wall that we are all invited, including dogs, to eat, right off the wall.

From part of a performance curatorial event  Interconnected Performers by Nicole Fournier (collaboration between InTerreArt and articule) between Nicole Fournier, tagny duff and eric letourneau.

We are performance artists, performing interrelationships between species and alive (organic) and inorganic matter – between people in various stages of development (baby, child, adolescent, adult) and of mixed genders. Matter is: alive wooden drums, alive carrots (food for rabbits), mixed matter toys for sand play, and grades of sands and their quantity.

Nicole Fournier proposes a concept that is performance actions as play - playing with improvised responses to the moment, structured and unstructured play, work as play, play as work - in sand, with sand. Nicole Fournier’s proposed concept is a conceptual collective performance with sand, rabbits, kids and parents/artists/musicians, as a response to the sandbox-beach-gallery, bringing new meaning to the beach party.

The performers include : Joanna Peters and Max Sansalone, professional Musicians/percussionist, their kids Amelia (4 yrs) and Giacomo (18months) Sansalone; Marie-Suzanne Désilets, Artist and her child/rabbit Charbon Désilets, and Nicole Fournier, Artist and her teenage sons Wes and Smith Fournier-Bourgeois, and their children rabbits Snif and Lily Fournier.

The perfomance artists are: Sand, rabbits, kids, parents/artists/musicians, and other, to be determined, organic and inorganic bodies/mediators/mediums of play.

How does the parent-child relationships play out in the sand? Balancing our adult identity, the child within and our role as parents, adult and child emotional states, being an adult, teenagers, child or animal, emotional attachments, feelings, demands and the need to manage it all, the sand becomes a mediator/medium of play and emotional distraction, as a mediating environment for these relationships.

4 adults/parents, 2 children, 2 teenagers and 3 rabbits will interact all together, responding to the moment, to the emotions that arise, in a context of drumming, performance, playing with each other in the sand. All represent different complexities in the parent-child relationship, which include the patterns we learn in our relationships with our mother’s and father’s and how these play out in intimate relationships. Running after kids or kids running free without parental controls, the continuity and concentration of actions are interrupted by the children’s and rabbit’s unpredictable behaviors, and how the adults respond to being interrupted in the pursuit of concentrated work or play. Art interdisciplinary performance theory and personal experience are mixed, merging new definitions of performance artists and the concrete emotional challenges of relationships, self and parenting

Sand as mediator and medium of play

Sand = accumulation of sand particles = is/are performance artist(s)

Sand, not a person, is mediator of the relationships. Sand is a mediating environment for parent-child-inter-species-matter relationships.

Sand as a group is the mediator; it is a non-human mediator performance artist.

The perfomance artists are: Sand, rabbits, kids, parents/artists/musicians, and other, to be determined, organic and inorganic bodies/mediators/mediums of play.

The relationships are interconnections between inter-species-parent-child-matter.

The sand matter being a metaphor for the microcosm and macrocosm, each grain of sand represent the passage of time, each grain being a world in itself, and thus the accumulation and existence of all these grains/times/worlds/relationships/interconnections making up sand.

Bringing new definitions into the tradition of performance art with these interconnected performers.

These interconnected performers are interconnected performance artists.

One human body or a group of human bodies acting separately but together in process, emphasizing the interconnectedness and interrelating between the bodies, and other bodies not defined as human: sand, rabbits, molecule, enzyme, sand particle, air, virus, wood. Looking at what defines a body.

Grades of sand particles: single grains of sand ranges 0.063 mm to 0.2 mm diameter, or fine sand (1⁄8 mm - 1⁄4 mm), medium sand (1⁄4 mm - 1⁄2 mm), coarse sand (1⁄2 mm - 1 mm), and very coarse sand (1 mm - 2 mm).

We are kids, adults, and animals and selves-other, other-selves, all in one, and one each one.

Kids are a ball of emotion (ranging from pleasant (easy) to extremely difficult emotions), with parents job having to deal with this irrationality and unpredictability in their daily lives, especially before the age of 5 years old. If we have a hard time with emotional people, well kids are the quintessential of the emotional person. Negotiating and dealing with emotions is a constant, between kids and parents. Rationality, forget about it before the ages of 5, but even thereafter, maturation or control over one’s emotion is work. Children are naturally egocentric and dictators, who have to be taught how to consider others, empathize and socialize (for some it comes more naturally than others), but this is the parent’s job, which gives us our grey hairs and makes us feel we are on the verge of a nervous breakdown. And one day, we become our own parents, seems that is what our conscious is. Ok, But thank goodness we love the little buggers (our kids and ourselves), thank goodness for that emotional attachment, the bond between parent and child and the good times when we give them our attention and encouragement and our presence, cause otherwise putting up with emotional strife between me and my kids, could just make you give up, if you did not live the wonderful moments that are possible, which are also unpredictable as well.

Sand on the gallery floor = sandbox, with a new meaning to the beach party, is a gallery beach.

Sand as part of the collective of performance artists of interconnected performers.

As Joanna gets into a groove, it might become the focus and be well played or she will get interrupted by her kids. Marie-Suzanne might have to run after her child rabbit to protect him from the baby Giacomo who wants to squeeze him too tight.
